KARBALA MARTHYRS, A PERSIAN EDUCATIONAL PRINT.

A list of the Karbala marthyrs, a large-size Persian educational print dedicated to the Karbala battle. The text recounts the tragic events and contains poems dedicated to the marthyrs. At the centre, the biblical episode of Abraham's sacrifice links the Karbala massacre to the origins of Islam. The body of Abraham is about to slaughter is not Isaac, as in Hebrew tradition, but Ishmael was saved from sacrifice by the timely intervention of the archangel Gabriel and later became the ancestor of the Arab race, making Mohammed one of his descendents. Husain's horse on the Karbala battlefield in an another large-size persian print, is abundant in colour and silver. The battle of Karbala is reported also in a figurative persian illustration that includes depictions of the combatants (as opposed to the more usual symbolic representation, divided into numerous episodes with captions, as in a cartoon story.
